Description
Along the former "Iron Curtain”, the longest system of habitats in Europe has been preserved due to decades of inaccessibility. GREEN BELT mainly aims at the long-term protection of this unique natural heritage, thus contributing to the implementation of NATURA 2000 and EU spatial policies such as ESDP.
As borders also constrained the economic development of the adjacent regions, GREEN BELT at the same time focuses on using the natural potential of the regions for a sustainable development. Supported by feasibility studies and common PR activities, GREEN BELT will implement pilot projects with solution-oriented approaches in the fields of sensitive traffic, tourism, regional marketing and education.
By transforming the former „death belt” into a green ”life line”, the project aims at fostering the communication between the people once separated and raise the awareness that nature protection can be compatible with sustainable regional development: "Borders separate. Nature unites”.
